Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia today launched a broadside against MCA vice president Chew Mei Fun, demanding that she not interfere in matters concerning Muslim attire.

 

This is after Chew criticised an operation by the Kota Bharu Municipal Council to fine Muslim women who do not wear the headscarf or dress modestly.

 

"To Mei Fun, leave the code of ethics for Muslim women to Muslims. Non-Muslims don't need to interfere or be busybodies for narrow political interests and at the same time insulting Muslims," said the daily's assistant editor Ku Seman Ku Hussain in today's Sunday edition, Mingguan Malaysia .

 

He added that Muslims too have never interfered in how non-Muslims should dress other than in certain events which required all to dress respectfully.

 

Ku Seman also appeared to take a veiled jab at Chew's former party president Chua Soi Lek ( left ).

 

"For example, there are some non-Muslims who can accept extra-marital sex as a way of life and it does not affect the political career of leaders who engage in it.

 

"But it is not allowed in Islam. Leaders who engage in extra-marital sex will fall off the political stage," he said.

 

Chua, who was then health minister, had in 2008 resigned from his positions after admitting to being the man in a sex video where he was with a woman who was not his wife.

 

However, in 2010, Chua made a comeback after being elected as the new MCA president, prompting Chew to resign.

 

"My advice to Chew, try to respect the house rules of others if there is none in your own house," said Ku Seman.

 

He added instead of harping on having to dress modestly, Chew should address discrimination against Muslim women who wear the headscarf by non-Malay companies.
