The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) wants the Road Transport Department (RTD) to reveal the names of all those who win bids for fancy vehicle plate numbers in order to avoid any "prejudice" in the future.

PAC chaiperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed said today the PAC does not have any problem with how the bidding for number plates takes place, but the only problem is with winners names being "hidden", as this creates misunderstanding among the public.

"The RTD has said it has no problem to do so if it is instructed to do so (release the names by the Transport Ministry)," Nur Jazlan told a press conference at the Parliament lobby this evening.

Recently, a couple of members of a royal family won the top bids for the BMW number plates, but were named as "government administration members" in the RTD list of winning bidders.

"No civil officer is given such privileges to get free plate numbers," Nur Jazlan said.

Nur Jazlan said that ministers are given the privilege of one free plate number for each ministry they helm, while the prime minister and deputy prime minister get two plate numbers each.

The sultans across the country are afforded seven plate numbers each, he further revealed.

However, he said that the PAC will not be taking action if a minister buys a plate number out of his or her own pocket.

“That is not the PAC’s concern. If that happens, it is up to RTD to justify but so far, in their records, no such thing has happened,” he said.
