Three students who were hurt after their test rocket exploded in Manir, 12.3km from Kuala Terengganu, yesterday were now in a stable condition at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ).

 HSNZ director Dr Abdul Rahim said the students of the Industrial Training Institute at Gong Badak, here, Khairul Shahiran Che Ibrahim, 19, Nazrin Che Mohamad, 20, and Mohd Afiq Mohd Misran, 18, were rushed to NSNZ at 7pm.

 He said doctors worked on Khairul Shahiran, who was the worst injured, at 3am, after giving him preliminary treatments, to close the wounds on his hands and stitch them back together.

He said Mohd Afiq, 18, and Nazrin, 20, were treated for eye injuries at the relevant unit. Mohd Afiq had abrasions on the corneas of both eyes while Nazrin had a haemorrhage in one of his eyes.

“However, the injuries will not affect their vision as they will recover after several follow-up treatments,” he told reporters after a media briefing on the service of the HSNZ Neurosurgery Unit in Kuala Terengganu today.

“The three victims were in a stable condition after getting treatment upon their arrival yesterday. The hospital is monitoring them to determine their progress.

Elaborating further, Abdul Rahim said Khairul Shahiran would undergo plastic surgery soon to rehabilitate and get back the form and function of his hands.

“Although the injuries on his hands are severe, the hospital will endeavour as best as possible (to treat him) and we are confident his hands can recover with the expertise and the medical technology available at HSNZ,” he added.
