Senior lawyer Cecil Abraham will now appear for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in the suit filed against it by lawyer Rosli Dahlan, over what is known as the ' Copgate ' affair.

Cecil is a member of the anti-corruption body’s Operations Review Panel.

The matter was made known before Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Su Geok Yiam, who allowed the postponement of the hearing, which was initially fixed for five days, beginning today.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers had, in a letter dated Nov 6, applied for the postponement so that Cecil ( left ) could take over the case.

The court had approved the postponement the next day, with today fixed for case management and to confirm the trial dates.

Following this, Justice Su fixed April 6 to 10 and other dates in May and June next year for the trial.

However, the judge did not allow costs sought by Rosli's counsel, Chethan Jethwani, against the MACC for the postponement, since the court was informed that the plaintiff (Rosli) wanted to amend his statement of claim and following this, the MACC will also amending its statement of defence.

Rosli's RM50 million suit against Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd and the MACC was last month fixed for five days, beginning today, after four changes of judges had been made.

Rosli was lawyer to former Commercial Crime Investigations Department chief Ramli Yusuf.

It is understood that former Deputy Home Minister Johari Bahrom is one of the witnesses to be called in the hearing.

Cecil is also representing Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail in another suit by Rosli, an RM48 million suit against the AG and the Attorney-General's Chambers for malicious prosecution, abuse of power, malfeasance in the performance of public duty and prosecutorial misconduct.  

Gani ( right ), through Cecil, had applied to strike out this suit, but failed when Judicial Commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera ruled that the nation's top legal officer is not immune to legal action.

The case before Vazeer is still pending, after which Gani did not want to consolidate this case with the matter before Justice Su.

Cecil himself is being investigated for allegedly drafting the second statutory declaration of former private investigator, the late P Balasubramaniam, regarding the murder of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu involving two police Special Action Unit members.

This matter is currently being investigated the the Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board.
