A DAP representative has proposed for the rotation of the Penang chief minister’s post and to limit the tenure to two terms in order to give other capable leaders a chance to serve.

Tanjong Bungah assemblyperson Teh Yee Cheu ( left ) said the suggestion will give other leaders a chance to run Penang, including women.

“If we want to realise this, all parties need to work towards it from now. It is a good idea from the aspect of democracy and hopefully all quarters will support this proposition,” he said in a debate session at the state assembly sitting in George Town yesterday.

The motion also received support from Opposition Leader Jahara Hamid and DAP Pulau Tikus assemblyperson Yap Soo Huey.

Jahara’s support for the motion raised dissatisfaction from state Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairperson Phee Boon Poh who questioned why Barisan Nasional did not support women becoming a menteri besar in Selangor.

Jahara then slammed Phee’s question, saying she did not want to bring up the issue of the Kajang by-election as it would only effect PKR.

However, the motion was not favoured and strongly opposed by Air Hitam assemblyperson and political secretary to the chief minister, Wong Hon Wai, who said the matter was irrelevant to the issue being debated.

Teh then said each matter was relevant and asked for the motion to be supported.
