Seven Malaysians have been charged in court for supporting Islamic State militants in Syria, a news report said today.

Two financial consultants were charged with allegedly soliciting money online for the extremist forces, The Sun Daily newspaper said.

Prosecutors also charged a suspected Malaysian jihadist who returned to Kuala Lumpur earlier in the year, as well as four other people who attempted to go Syria to join the Islamic State militants.

The charges carry penalties of up to 30 years in jail.

Four Malaysians were charged in court last month for attempting to support the jihadists in Syria.

Interior Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said police had identified 39 Malaysians who have joined the Islamic militants in Syria, and he vowed to take action against them when they return to the country.
