'Use Malaysian mould in human rights discussions'

Slumdog: There should not be any thought of a Malaysian version of human rights which is different from the western version of human rights.

 

You can’t have variations in human rights values. Just because the society is different in the west, it does not mean that their human rights are different. Human rights is a universal doctrine.

 

We already have a warped Malaysian version of democracy. Is Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri now advocating our own version of human rights?

 

Because of our diversity in race, religion, culture and beliefs, there is no better reason to adopt universal human rights principles.

 

Quigonbond: What's a ‘Malaysian mould’ in human rights? Human rights based on racial and religious discrimination, rule by force, abuse of power, partisan enforcement agencies, electoral deformity and one-sided mainstream media reporting? No, thank you.

 

The Analyser: Dear Nancy, I know that it's difficult for you to understand, but I think you'll find that every developed country is a multi-ethnic country. There is nothing unique about Malaysia in that regard.

 

The only way to deal with a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious society is to honour all people with the full range of human rights as outlined in the UN Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR). It's that simple.

 

You don't have to reinvent the wheel as is done so often in Malaysia because you think your group is different from all other humans.

 

Jesmine: Nancy, by Malaysia-style human rights do you mean corruption of federal government offices are allowed, killing prisoners is allowed, making a mockery of the judicial system by federal government is allowed, excessive spending by certain wives of ministers are allowed, racist/religious mockery are allowed, corruption by federal government personnel are allowed...

 

Opah: Nancy Shukri means that in Malaysia human rights include imprisoning those who oppose Umno without trial, dragging to court those who ask for the constitution to be respected and punishing those that expose corruption and crony capitalism.

 

Sleepy: There is a difference between universal human rights and foreign cultures. How can promoting human rights be detrimental to one's culture? Maybe the minister can explain?

Odysseus: Nancy, the more you open your mouth, the worse it becomes. Your Sarawakian roots will not be able to save you if you continue to remain in the cabinet.

 

Firstly, Malaysia is not the only country in the world that is multi-racial. Secondly, you failed to explain what is this mould you are referring to. Thirdly, at the present moment, it seems that only those who create disunity and issuing threats daily are protected.

 

Please stop embarrassing yourself and the country.

 

Imanust Nais Yalam: Is the burning bibles okay under the National Human Rights Action Plan (NHRAP)?

 

Tan Kim Keong: There is no need to come up with the NHRAP. The benchmark is the UNDHR. Just adopt that charter on human rights from United Nations if Umno is sincere about human rights in Malaysia.

 

Contact the UNDHR team at the UN if the ministry is not sure how to proceed. Question is how sincere is Umno about pursuing human rights that is universally accepted?

 

Ketuanan Rakyat: As long as everything is done for the benefit of Umnoputras and their cronies including Perkasa and Isma, there will not be suitable basis to work with in the interest of future generations.

 

Any wonder why a lot of capable and outstanding youngsters are moving out of Malaysia? Malaysia will be moving backwards if no positive actions are taken now.

 

Telestai!: What Malaysian mould? Malaysia has a horrible record in human rights and trafficking. The government trample on the people's rights every minute of the day.

 

Look at the daily racial and religious discrimination, police torture, suppressing the rights of transgenders are just a few examples. 

 

It would be much better for Nancy Shukri to keep her mouth shut in this instance. 

 

Kingfisher: What a load of contradictions in delivery and obviously in convictions. To speak on some fundamental aspects of human dignity and to identify them with universal benchmarks and yet to conclude by rationalising that we should adopt our own values seems bewildering to say the least.

 

An old adage advises that it is better not to speak and be thought a fool rather than articulate something and leave no doubt it.

 

Well Thats Fantastic: Better put on ear protection because the collective laughs or gasps of horror will cause hearing damage.
