A Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) student is facing charges at his own university court for allegedly “spoiling UIA’s reputation” by participating and giving a talk during the Universiti Malaya (UM) rally for a talk by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim recently.

In a statement today, UIA fourth year law undergraduate Aisyah Humayrah Kamaruzaman said that Muhammad Mujahid Sulaiman’s trial, due last Friday, has been postponed to Nov 21 as the university had failed to appoint a legal adviser to represent him.

Aisyah said that Mujahid’s speech, which lasted five minutes, can now cause him to be suspended or expelled from the university.

“During the trial day, about 60 students had gathered to show solidarity for Mujahid but were not allowed to go past a barricade set up by 20 security personnel,” Aishyah said.

The next trial date will fall just one day after UIA’s campus elections, and more people are expected to show up in solidarity with Mujahid, Aishyah said.

“The trial next Friday is expected to be eventful and more students will show solidarity with Mujahid to defend the rights of students and demand justice over this ridiculous charge,” she said.
