Umno will close shop if Malays not under threat

YOURSAY ‘Umno can only rule if Malays feel threatened, fearful and helpless.’

'Stop obsessing about Malays under threat'

Ferdtan: In calling for the Malay community not to be obsessed over claims by certain quarters that Malays were under threat, national laureate A Samad Said is a lone voice among the country’s Malay intelligentsia.

Where are the rest of them? Afraid of losing their earthly concerns like jobs, money, cars and big houses?

It is sad that the path forward for the country is being paved by a 79-year-old man and recently by young university students such as Universiti Malaya student leader Fahmi Zainol, activists Adam Adli, Muhammad Safwan and Ali Abd Jalil, who had fled to Sweden to seek political asylum.

FairMind: The Malays were never under threat. It's Umno and its cronies who are under threat.

Two of the country's richest states, Selangor and Penang, fell to opposition. Their contracts and gravy trains which they are so addicted to for the past 50 years have dried up.

These Umno lords and their cronies are "hungrier" than ever and have many mouths to feed as well as palms to grease. Hence, they felt the threat as there is not enough to go around.

The rest of the ordinary Malaysian go on with their normal lives and are in good terms with one another. Umno just wants to break this harmony and retain power so that it can go back to its freeloading days.

Basically: Of course, there is no 'threat'. They need a bogeyman to keep the Malays blind and loyal to Umno. And they need a scapegoat for that threat, so they target the Chinese and Christians, with the collusion of BN partners such as MCA, Gerakan and SUPP, etc.

The day the Malays realise there is no such threat, and that the real threat to Malays and the country in general is Umno-BN, is the day the Malay community will start to really achieve, and even exceed, the NEP (New Economic Policy) targets, all by themselves.

Umno-BN doesn’t want that because that will make them irrelevant.

Telestai!: I fully agree with Pak Samad. Malays and Islam in Malaysia are not under threat. Whatever threats perceived by Umno are manufactured to keep the Malays insecure so that they look to Umno for protection.

This political capital of Umno is the only thing that is under threat.

Apa Ini?: That's how Umno stays in power - by constantly warning Malays they are under threat, and by playing up on their fears.

Right-thinking Malays know this only deepens a sense of insecurity and weakens the image of the Malays. It's counter-productive, but our politicians are a cross-eyed under-educated lot, busy buying votes and disabling the rakyat in the process. Sad indeed.

Man on the Street: In five decades in power, what has grown in Umno is the bribery culture, radical religious views and its plundering tactics.

As Pak Samad has repetitively said, Umno has failed in so many ways. The time has come for Umno to admit its mistakes and change its ways. Otherwise, Umno will be history very soon and another Malay party will rule the country.

Malaysian 53: Pak Samad, it is appreciated that you said these words. If a non-Malay is to repeat these words, it would probably be considered seditious. Thank you.

Swipenter: Many times have Umno Baru political leaders and their ilk threatened the Chinese with violence and another 'May 13' over the last decade. Even the present PM had allegedly threatened to "bathe the keris with Chinese blood" when he was Umno Youth chief.

What about the present defence minister’s keris-waving antics at an Umno Baru AGM? What about the present home minister calling Chinese ungrateful citizens?

There are other incidents that others can add to here. Point out to us one incident that the Chinese had threatened the Malays with violence since independence?

The only "sins" the Chinese have committed are the colour of their skin, being hardworking and their immense contribution to the development of Bolehland.

Casey: It puzzles me: why does Umno continue to play racial politics - pitting the Malays, the Muslims, against the rest of the country.

Is the president of Umno's only aspiration to be the prime minister of Umno? Or to be the prime minister of Malays? Or to be the prime minister of Peninsular Malaysia? Or is it to be the prime minister of Malaysia?

It occurs to me that only fools, cowards, liars and the self-serving corrupt - hiding in high places, unfortunately - will resort to such foolish and unashamed strategy to manage a country.

Hmmmmmmmm: I believe it is more accurate to say that the position of Malays is threatened by the newly-minted bumiputeras from Indonesia, Philippines, Bangladesh, etc.

Just see how many of them have risen up the ranks of Umno already and they are the most vocal against non-bumis.

Abasir: Umno can only rule if the majority of Malays feel threatened, fearful and totally helpless. A minority, however, enjoys their baubles, fancy cars and palatial homes in New York, London, Barcelona, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Fair Play: If Malays and Islam are not under 'threat', there is no reason for Umno to be around. It’s as simple as that.
