Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his cabinet have been urged to lead the fight against extremism.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said Najib, especially, should not merely call on the country's 'silent majority' to stand up against extremism.

Kok's statement comes after Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Joseph Kurup ( right ) yesterday asked the country's silent majority to protest against religious extremism and bigotry.

Najib himself had, last year, said the same thing, stressing that diversity should be celebrated.

"Malaysians will agree that extremism, whether religious or racial, must be totally rejected.

"But the question many Malaysians have been asking is why have the prime minister and his cabinet have not been leading the battle against extremists and extremism?" Kok asked in a statement today.

"Why has the prime minister, who has spoken so much about the concept of moderation and the need to reject extremism, failed to walk his talk?"

She also pointed out how Najib had been silent thus far, having failed to take action against extremism.

Citing Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali who, has not been reprimanded for his actions, which include his threat to burn the Bible, Kok said the cabinet has, to date, failed to take a clear stand on the issue.

"The prime minister and Joseph Kurup must not stop at calling on the silent majority to drown out the voices of extremism.

"Najib himself must walk his talk and lead the fight against extremism,” Kok added.
