Wanita MCA’s speed dating events have witnessed more men signing up and more couples getting hitched.

Wanita MCA chief Heng Seai Kie said there was a 5 percent increase in the number of men aged 30 and below who signed up for the events between 2012 and this year, reports The Star today.

“Previously, the men tended to shy away from such programmes. Most of them were too focused on their careers. They were too busy to meet new people out of their social circles,” Heng said.

“Apart from their workplaces, they did not have many avenues to find a suitable partner.”

As a way to remedy the problem where more and more Chinese are remaining single, the Cupid Space Speed Dating Hi-Tea Party is organised annually.

“The event is a platform for men and women to meet 110 other singles of the opposite sex,” said Heng.

Programme executor Peggy Lim claimed that 10 percent of the participants in past events managed to start a relationship with someone they met at the event.

“This year alone, we have 17 couples informing us that they are getting married,” said Lim.

This year’s event will be held at Eastin Hotel in Petaling Jaya on Dec 14 from 11.30am to 4pm.

Those interested may register at Level 13, Wisma MCA on Nov 29, Nov 30 and Dec 7 from noon to 4pm.

Meanwhile, MCA said it is looking to revamp the party election process by allowing its 50,000 division delegates to choose the leadership in future party elections instead of the current group of 2,400 central delegates.

However, this would entail amendments to the party’s constitution during its annual general meeting next year.

MCA president Liow Tiong Lai believes such reforms would help overcome problems such as power struggles.

“I think the chaos in the party is a thing of the past,” he said, as quoted by The Star after chairing the party’s seventh central committee meeting yesterday.

Liow however said more time was needed to discuss the party’s structural reforms.

He said the party would first expand its delegates representation system, before a direct election system could be implemented.
