A group of Cameron Highlands residents fed up with repeat incidents of landslides in the mountain resort have accused the government of shifting attention to illegal migrant workers who have been blamed.

"There appears to be no effective solution that (the government) has made to stem the problem immediately.

"In fact, illegal immigrants are being blamed as the source of the illegal land clearing, and the real issue is being diverted from," said a local action group Rakyat Prihatin Cameron's (RPC) representative Roy Margaret.

Earlier this month, a deadly mudslide, the third this year, killed five people including a 13-year-old student.

The incident has triggered a furious blame game among the Pahang government, Cameron Highlands MP G Palanivel that invovled even the palace.

The landslides is now attributed to illegal land clearing blamed on illegal immigrants.

In a desperate call for action, RPC has planned a forum with Palanivel and Tanah Rata assemblyperson Leong Ngah Ngah and will stage a walk and candlelight vigil in the Ringlet - Bertam Valley area on Sunday.

Solution now, gov't told

Roy said they are just a group of residents who are "really fed up with the tragedies and the environmental problems that repeatedly happen in our home."

He said the walk this weekend is to commemorate the victims of the tragedies that took place on Nov 5 as well as Oct 23 last year.

"These tragedies have robbed lives and have left a deep financial losses in the eyes and hearts of the residents," he said.

The event, she said, is to raise awareness among Cameron Highlands' residents about the seriousness of the problem and commemorate the lost lives.

RPC also aims to urge the government to take responsibility and provide solutions in consultation with the residents.

On the day they will hand a memorandum to the government urging them to start the process in engagement with the locals.
