Online payment gateway MOLPay Sdn Bhd has said it did not reveal the customer details of Zunar’s book to the police, but the political cartoonist is not convinced.

 

“The statements from MOLPay officers are doubtful and do not convince me. There is no single guarantee (in their Nov 26 communication with me) that the complete list has not already been given to the police (prior to Nov 17),” Zunar said in a statement yesterday.

 

Last week, it was reported that the police had asked MOLPay, which handles Zunar's book online transactions, to disclose the list of customers who have purchased his book.

 

Following that, MOLPay chief executive officer Eng Sheng Guan told Malaysiakini that to date, the company had clarified with Zunar that it did not disclose any customer details that the police had requested of them.

 

"We have clarified with Zunar on the matter on Nov 26 that after our first email dated Nov 17, the management of MOLPay decided not to disclose any customer details to police," Eng had said.

 

Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar ulHaque, said after receiving the initial email from MOLPay dated Nov 17, he sent three emails to MOLPay, dated Nov 17, Nov 20, and Nov 26.

 

MOLPay finally replied on November 26, the content of which, according to Zunar, did not carry any weight.

 

Seeking clarification

According to Zunar, the statement 10 days later "indicated that the MOLPay management has changed their decision does not carry any meaning if the information had already been furnished to the police.”

 

Zunar’s said he is "doubtful" because the initial email he received from MOLPay on Nov 17 stated that “MOLPay has no choice but to furnish them with the requested details”.

 

In his statement, Zunar ( left ) also said he had requested MOLPay provide him with a copy of the letter from the police demanding his customer list.

In addition, Zunar also wants a copy of the response from MOLPay to the police denying the customer list.

 

“As a customer, I am entitled to a clarification on this issue to be sent directly to me; otherwise I will have to refer this to my lawyer,” added Zunar.

 

The book in question is 'Komplot Penjarakan Anwar' (Plot to Jail Anwar), which the police alleged contains seditious material.

 

The police are probing Zunar under Section 8(2) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948, and Section 500 of the Penal Code, after two police reports were lodged against him.
