PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu has warned his party not to fall for the trap of Umno's "racial game" played out at the ruling party's annual general assembly this week.

"Racial issues represent Umno's primary weapon to scare the Malays and the other races.

"They (BN) will use whatever opportunity available to spread racial issues, and we in PAS need to be wary that we are not trapped in the game they are playing," PAS organ Harakah Daily today reported Mohamad Sabu saying.

The Penang PAS commissioner stressed PAS will oppose BN's racial issues and strive to bring a new brand of politics for all races.

Race and religion have been the prime obsession at Umno's annual general assembly in Kuala Lumpur this week.

The Chinese, in particular Chinese-majority party DAP, have been regular targets for Umno leaders and delegates to play to the gallery.

'PAS will strengthen Pakatan council'

Meanwhile commenting on the recent animosity within Pakatan Rakyat, Mohamad Sabu said his party will work to contiune strengthening Pakatan's presidential council.

"Differences in opinion are normal. All parties have their own views but that is not a major problem, in fact, it strengthens us.

"PAS will continue to strengthen the presidential council to make Pakatan strong and mature and acceptbed by the general public," he was reported saying when officiating PAS's 63rd anniversary celebrations in Perak.

Earlier this month PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang responded to DAP's complaints that he had not been attending the coalition's presidential council meetings with an adamant, "If I want to attend, I will attend."

Friction between Hadi and the opposition coalition boiled over during the protracted Selangor menteri besar imbroglio, which saw the PAS president going behind the Pakatan council's back on their collective decision on the choice of the state's new MB.

PAS’ syura council subsequently took disciplinary action against two of its Selangor assemblypersons Saari Sungib and Hasnul Baharuddin for defying Hadi and siding with the Pakatan decision to nominate PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for the post.
