Electoral reform group Bersih today reminded the Election Commission (EC) that political parties are not the only stakeholders in the ongoing redelineation exercise.

 

As such, Bersih said EC should also involve members of the public.

 

"The EC should consult with the public in open forums, where all citizens can put forward recommendations.

 

"Closed-door meetings between the EC and political parties give the perception the delineation exercise is being designed around the wishes of politicians instead of the interests of the rakyat," it said in a statement today.

 

It also urged the EC to abide by the participation process of the redelineation exercise as per the federal constitution.

 

In a related matter, Bersih said it welcomed Pakatan's public statement that the coalition had yet to decide on whether to accept the redelineation.

 

This is after Bersih earlier urged Pakatan to reject any increase in parliamentary seats in the redelineation exercise.

 

Pakatan had said that it will only decide after the EC provide the coalition with a draft of the redelineation.
