Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin is puzzled why his speech at the wing's general assembly had disappointed netizens.

He blamed news portals for taking his speech out of context.

"Is it so disappointing to mention the word 'social contract', this is the basis of the Federation of Malaya?" he said.

In his speech, Khairy had reminded non-Malays to remember their "original promise" which is in the social contract and warned non-Malays to stop questioning Malay right.

Speaking to reporters today, the youth and sports minister said the public should read his speech in entirety, and not only read the reports in Malaysiakini , The Malaysian Insider and Malay Mail Online .

"If the people refused to read my speech in entirety, I can't do anything about that," he said.

 

In fact, he said, the entire context of his speech was to remind all Malaysian of the responsibility to uphold the social contract.

 

"There are certain expectations of all community - for the Malay-bumiputera community and the non-Malays. We respect all of that, we respect non-Malays' citizenship," he said.

 

He also criticised some media for not highlighting his emphasis of defending vernacular schools.

 

Khairy, largely perceived to be part of a more moderate faction of Umno, also caused a stir over his reaction to the renaming of major Kuala Lumpur roads to that of previous Agongs.

He had said the social media response to the renaming exercise was the proof that Malay institutions are being questioned.
