Thai anti-corruption authorities will fund a series of soap operas as part of their fight against entrenched graft, a report said today.

The National Anti Corruption Commission is producing and funding 10 fictional works - including books, movies and soap operas - based on real-life corruption cases, the Bangkok Post reported.

“We want citizens to understand exactly what corruption is and for them to ask themselves what ways there are to solve the problem,” said NACC spokesperson Vicha Mahakul to local media.

Shooting is already under way on the television programmes based on corruption cases including the rice subsidy plan of the previous government under ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra. The first programmes are due to air in mid-2015.

Corruption over the policy was one of the reasons cited by the military for launching a military coup which toppled the democratically elected government in May.

Thailand ranks 85th out of 174 countries in the latet Transparency International corruption index, released today.
