The issue of identification documents for illegal immigrants in Sabah does not need more Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as announced by Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday, but instead "political will".

 

PKR's Alor Setar MP Gooi Hsiao Leong said in a statement today that Zahid had "downplayed" the gravity of the illegal immigrants problem in Sabah.

 

"The problem with illegal immigrants in Sabah is not due to lack of SOPs but the cover-up or lack in political will to uncover the truth and reveal the mastermind and culprits behind Project IC," Gooi said.

 

"The Home Minister is totally avoiding the thing Sabahans want most - to discover and prosecute those responsible for the treasonous act of Project IC, and secondly, to take immediate action to rectify the problem of illegals holding identification cards in Sabah," he added.

 

Gooi ( left ) said that recalling the identity cards issued illegally could be done with "will and sincerity" from Putrajaya.

 

He also criticised the notion of placing the blame on the issuance of illegal identity cards on civil servants at the time.

 

"Surely the civil servants are working for those higher ups - who are they? It appears that everyone in the country except  Putrajaya wants to know who these culprits and masterminds are," he said.

 

"Project IC is not only Sabahan or Borneo problem. It is a Malaysian problem," he added.

 

He also called for the problem to be rectified before the Election Commission (EC) concludes its redelineation process, so that the electoral roll is clean of illegal immigrants registered as voters.
