US VP tweets concerns over Sedition Act

Quigonbond: The United States is probably nearing to seal a deal with Malaysia over TPPA (Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement).

Now they are singing a popular tune with the Malaysian public as leverage to negotiate the final clause with the government.

I doubt US really cared about the state of our democracy. If they did, they would not have called PM Najib Razak a friend when his record is littered with questions.

They would have sounded the alarm bell the moment people like the late Karpal Singh were charged with sedition and then convicted, while Ibrahim Ali can fire tens of seditious remarks and not even dusted for prints.

Sorry, Washington. My respect for this administration has gone down the drain. Even if you genuinely cared now, it's a case of too little too late.

The right-wing of Umno is already on the march and their momentum picked up a long time ago.

Can they afford another equally strong, if not stronger headwind in Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy case? I think not. Besides, when the US vice-president spoke, one can only ignore it at one's own peril.

BTN: Boy, the Americans think they have the best system in the world and see themselves fit to comment on any country in the world as they see fit. Look at themselves and their action first.

The world has become very unsafe and innocent people are dying every day on account of their actions. They should show a good example before they poke their nose into other people’s affairs.

That said, I'm against Najib’s Sedition Act and I think it’s cowardly of him to make a U-turn just to save his own skin.

SMC77: I just don't care whether US is voicing out its concerns over Malaysia. Ultimately, US will be happily to sell out DSAI (Anwar) in exchange for stronger ties with Najib to counter the growing influence of China in Southeast Asia.

Obama, and whoever is going to take over his job, will be no different. They are presidents of US and anything works in the interest of US, they will support.

They are not freedom fighters and neither do they hold any moral high ground.

Twice as many Malaysians are emigrating compare to the global average. Does that not tell us something?

Hopeful123: As Ex-PJ has said, no country is perfect. So we must take criticisms in the right frame of mind and analyse what has been said by the US vice-president.

We must be courageous to own up our mistakes and confront them, and not go into a self-defence mode and accuse the other party of doing the same thing. It not only looks childish but rather stupid too.

Be thankful when our mistakes and shortcomings are pointed out and we should work towards correcting them.

Precisely. We understand what the victim Anwar in this particular case is going through, and want justice for him. We already know that Saiful Bukhari Azlan is just a pawn in the mischievous game of Najib and his now pathetic Umno Baru party leaders.

Yes, Tan, you are right. Justice is also important in our country. We all saw how the Court of Appeal proceedings was rushed within two days and verdict given on the very late evening only to stop Anwar from contesting the Kajang by-election.

Surely you are not that stupid, or are you?

Retnam: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin is saying that Guantanamo and the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy conviction are the same.

Guantanamo is bad, everyone and his Isma will agree. So convicting Anwar is also bad?

Tan Kim Keong: All these antagonistic comments against US Vice President Joe Biden's tweets regarding the Sedition Act are at best emotional responses or for political mileage.

Biden was referring to institutions and laws that do not promote democracy or independence of the judiciary. These antagonistic comments are merely ad hominem arguments.
