Typhoon Hagupit was detected to be around 914km off the northeast of Kudat, Sabah, moving in the north-west direction at 15kph at around 5am today.

The Malaysian Meteorogical Department in a statement today said that the typhoon was detected at latitude 13.0 degrees north and longitude 122.4 degrees east.

Category 1 storms with wind speeds of up to 50kph and waves as high as 3.5m was expected to hit Sabah (Sandakan and Tawau), Sulu and Sulawesi coastal areas and it would continue till Wednesday.

The same was expected to happen in coastal areas of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, East Johor, Bintulu, Mukah, Rejang, Kuching, Sarawak, Samui, Tioman, and Reef South, and it would likely continue till Friday.

Category 2 storms with wind speeds of up to 60kph and waves as high as 4.5m as expected to continue on the coasts in Sabah, Labuan, Miri, Sarawak, Condore, Reef North, Layang-layang as well as Palawan until Friday.

The tropical storms were a danger to all shipping and beach activities, including fishing and ferry services, according to the statement.
