The Negeri Sembilan State Assembly today approved the Members of the Administration and State Legislative Assemblymen's (Remuneration) Act 1980 (Amendment 2014) Enactment Bill which will see a rise in the salaries of assemblymen in the state effective Jan 1.

The bill was tabled by Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan (BN-Rantau) and seconded by State Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Pertang).

Mohamad (below) said a comprehensive review on the renumeration of State Assemblymen and Members of the Administration was last implemented in 1992 and several adjustments were last made in 2005.

He said, with the change , state assemblymen would enjoy a salary of RM8,954, Speaker (RM10,888) Menteri Besar (RM19,175), State Executive Councillors (RM10,888) and political secretaries (RM5,000).

"The hike entails a financial implication estimated at RM3 million a year.

"The review also entails an adjustment of pensions of State Assemblymen, Speakers and Members of the Administration who have retired involving a financial implication of RM4.84 million a year," he said.

"In addition, the adjustment is aimed at ensuring Members of the State Government Administration, Speaker and State Assemblymen can carry out their duties and responsibilities to society more efficiently," he said.

The State Assembly session was adjourned sine die.
