Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali is still trapped under the weight of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, said political analyst Professor Mustafa Ishak.

The academician pointed out that with Azmin's 100th day in office approaching, there is still no clear indication as to which direction he is steering Selangor.

"Looks like he is being controlled by another quarter. He has still not emerged from his political guru’s cocoon.

"It appears that he is still unable to free himself from Anwar’s influence," Mustafa ( right ) told Malaysiakini .

The National Professors' Council head of the political cluster said it is "unhealthy" for Azmin to follow Anwar's lead and failing to display his own ability in administering Selangor.

"This is not good for someone who wants to be a credible menteri besar and if he aims to be more successful than (his predecessor) Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

"Until now, his ability and courage have yet to shine," he added.

Mustafa also said the newly-minted menteri besar appears to dodge issues in Selangor instead of solving them.

"The approach he takes is unclear and in several issues, he is more critical than providing a clear answer," he noted, adding that Azmin seemed to lack commitment.

Instead of providing answers, the professor said the menteri besar often hid behind the "no comment" response.

Azmin became the menteri besar of Selangor after a protracted crisis over the post, sparked off by the "Kajang Move".

Yesterday, another academician had said that Azmin is the best candidate to replace Anwar, who is " nearing extinction ".

Quizzed on this today, the menteri besar quipped that he was prepared to take over the helm if journalists supported him

Azmin has been with the opposition leader since the latter's days as deputy prime minister, serving as his political secretary.

After Anwar was sacked, Azmin also quit Umno.
