PAS’ insistence on implementing hudud will result in the opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat to end, says International Movement of a Just World president and political analyst Chandra Muzaffar.

Chandra was reported in the New Straits Times today as saying hudud has defined PAS’ political struggle even in today’s modern landscape.

“It is in their (PAS) DNA. It is something dear to them. Hence, the differences (between the opposition pact members) on the matter are irreconciliable.

“It is likely the alliance will meet its end, like Barisan Alternatif,” said Chandra, a former PKR deputy president.

National Professor Council political cluster head Mustafa Ishak warned that DAP is maybe moving to oust PAS from Pakatan or having the Islamist party’s deputy president, Mohamad Sabu,  replace Abdul Hadi Awang as PAS president.

“Yes, they are using hudud to attack Hadi. DAP wants Hadi to be out, so they turn against Hadi. Hadi will either be forced to leave Pakatan or drag the party out with him.

“Mat Sabu will challenge him for the PAS presidency. If he wins, Mat Sabu will return to the opposition coalition as the party’s president,” Mustafa told the daily.

Meanwhile, Sinar Harian reports that the implementation of hudud is an opportunity for Umno and PAS to form a political cooperation.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Syariah Department’s Islamic Faculty lecturer, Izhar Ariff Mohd Kassim, said tahaluf siyasi (cooperation) is needed to implement Islamic law in Malaysia.

“Do not feel that one should be indebted for the support as it is everyone’s responsibility as Muslims to implement Islamic laws.

“What is needed is comprehensive discussion between PAS and Umno leaders in implementing hudud,” he said.

Izhar said it is time that Muslims be united to fight for Islam in this country.

“If the Chinese can be united in rejecting hudud, why can’t Muslims be united in implementing it?” he asked.
