A woman will never forget a scary incident when she, her husband and four grandchildren almost drowned when their vehicle was swept into a river by flood water in Kampung Padang Raja, Machang on Wednesday.

Tengku Nisah Tengku Othman, 61, said in the incident at about noon, she and her 68-year-old husband who was driving a four-wheel-drive Suzuki Jeep, was travelling on a road which was under 0.3 metre of flood water when it skidded and was swept into a two-metre deep river and sank.

 

"I was sitting in the front passenger seat and my husband Tengku Aziz Tengku Abdullah pushed me out of the Jeep (during the incident) but I managed to cling to the door," she said when met by reporters while accompanying one of her grandchildren who was being treated at the Machang Hospital today.

She said her grandchildren Nik Fathullah Darwisy Mohd Faiza, three, Nik Anis Faqihah, five, Nik Fakhrullah Syafiyy, six, dan Nik Fakhrusy Syakirin, nine, were on the back seat.

Tengku Nisah said, in the confusion, her husband managed to save her and their two grandchildren and took them to higher ground by the road near the river.

    

"You cannot imagine how I felt realising two of my grandchildren (Nik Fathullah Darwisy dan Nik Fakhrullah Syafiyy) were still in the sunken jeep," she said.

Tengku Nisah was thankful her husband managed to rescue them from the vehicle.

"Only Nik Fathullah Darwisy had passed out with his face turning bluish. He was rushed to the Machang Hospital with the aid of passersby and rerouted to Raja Perempuan Zainab 11 in Kota Baharu as water had entered his lungs," she said.

 

Nik Fathullah Darwisy's condition had stabilised but he was sent back to the Machang Hospital for further treatment on Thursday.

She said her husband and herself had taken the grandchildren from their house in Pangkal Durian to observe the floods in several areas in Machang.

The children's mother, Tengku Azma Tengku Aziz, 36, who works as a nurse at Selayang Hospital, said, her husband, Mohd Faiza Abdul Rashid, 35, and herself were in Kuala Lumpur during the incident.

She said her four children had been sent to stay with her parents back in the village during the school holidays.
