Malay rights group Perkasa has established ties with a large Indonesian NGO, Laskar Merah Putih (LMP), which has previously spearheaded protests against Malaysia.

Utusan Malaysia reported today that the ties were established to form a new coalition called Gagasan Sebangsa Serumpun Nusantara (Sebangsa) after Perkasa attended LMP’s 14th anniversary in Indonesia recently.

In the report, Ibrahim and Perkasa's supreme council members were pictured along with LMP's top leaders during the celebrations.

Ibrahim and the rest of the Perkasa leadership had been donning LMP's soldier-like uniforms during the meet.

The Perkasa chief believes that the cooperation between the two NGOs could also spark a new “diplomatic track” between the two nations.

“It is Perkasa’s and LMP’s wish to help the governments ensure that the relationship between citizens of both countries is as strong as the diplomatic ties between the two nations,” he reportedly said.

LMP, which has 17 million members, had been vocal in defending the rights of the Indonesia people.

In 2010, LMP protesters even torched a Malaysian flag while protesting the arrest of three Indonesian fisheries officers by Malaysia that year.

LMP’s de facto leader Adek Erfil Manurung was quoted in the same report as saying that the previous protest in front of the Malaysian embassy in Indonesia does not mean that LMP has anything specific against Malaysia.

“It doesn’t mean we hate our brothers in Malaysia, we were merely defending Indonesian rights,” he was quoted as saying.

In its latest protest against Malaysia in 2014, LMP has vowed to commence “sweeping” Malaysians living in Medan, Indonesia following the murder of an Indonesian migrant worker in Malaysia earlier this year.

They had demonstrated in front of the Malaysian consulate at Medan and demanded that the Malaysian government apologise for the death.
