DAP has publicly lashed out at Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today for his ineffectiveness in dealing with the flood situations.

Yesterday it was reported that Muhiyiddin asked the people to “put trust” in him to deal with the flood crisis while Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is having his year-end holiday overseas.

DAP’s national publicity secretary Tony Pua said that Muhyiddin has yet to respond to the urging to declare a state emergency and has failed to see the urgency of the situation.

“Muhyiddin does not feel the necessity to call for a ‘state of emergency’ to enable and coordinate large scale mobilisation of available government machinery to help resolve and mitigate the disaster; he did not see any urgency to crack the whip on the National Security Council (NSC).

“How can Malaysians have faith and trust in the deputy prime minister when he told the media that he will only be calling a NSC meeting to discuss the national disaster some time on Saturday?” Pua quizzed in a statement today.

He added that the responses given by Muhyiddin was “lame” and showed that the government is not resilient in resolving the crisis which has been going on for a fortnight now.

“Muhyiddin’s lamest of response yesterday proved that we are running a headless government in the country with no urgent, cohesive and proactive response to the arising chaos.

“It proves the complete failure of the government when the NSC has not met despite the rapidly worsening flood crisis which started not yesterday but nearly two weeks ago,” Pua added.

Instead, he urged the NSC to be more proactive in their responses and contribute to easing the crisis.

"Every member of the NSC should be available at a moment’s notice to attend an emergency meeting to update and discuss plans to manage the massive woes facing the rakyat.

"Given the scale of the crisis, the NSC should have been meeting on a daily basis to cope with managing and directing the gigantic government bureaucracy,” Pua said.

Muhyiddin yesterday also told reporters that there was “no need” to declare an emergency in the wake of the floods as water supply and electricity has not been completely cut-off yet.  

Najib and him have also come under fire from various sides including PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang over their inaction on the flood disaster.
