The families of 36 victims of the New Year’s Eve stampede in Shanghai are to receive compensation of 800,000 yuan (about RM464,440) each, according to local authorities.
A different compensation would be granted to the 49 others who were injured in the same incident, Xinhua news agency reported.
The New Year's Eve stampede, which occurred at Shanghai's Bund, left 36 people dead, one of them a Malaysian student, and 49 injured.
Eleven local officials have been punished, four of them sacked and seven given disciplinary punishment, Xinhua reported yesterday.
The investigation report released yesterday pointed out that lack of public security, including inadequate prevention and preparation for the mass activity, as well as poor on-site management were the reasons which caused heavy casualties and serious consequences.
