A parents’ association has given the government’s move to start sex education for teenage boys a thumbs up, preferring this to lessons from the world wide web.

"If no formal education is given, teenage boys can easily go to the internet to learn about sex without any vetting.

"So rather than unqualified information, it is better we teach them in a more holistic and organized manner.

"We want men who are responsible or women will fall victim,” Majlis Permuafakatan Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru Nasional (PIBGN) president Mohamad Ali Hasan said.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim reportedly said that boys aged 16 and above will go through sex education starting next year.

The modules will include sexual and reproductive health and is aimed at curbing social ills, she is quoted by the New Sunday Times as saying.

Commenting on the module, Mohamad Ali said it should also include religious and spiritual aspects and not just focus on physical aspects.

"It is a question of responsibility of males, and I believe this is the root cause for many social ills he said.

More than 18,000 cases of pregnancy were recorded among youths aged 10 to 19 in 2013 alone, according to New Sunday Times ,

States with high rates of teen pregnancy include Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, Selangor, Perak and Pahang.
