G Palanivel is the interim president of MIC although the Registrar of Societies (RoS) has requested that the 2009 central working committee be reinstated in the interim prior to fresh party elections between May to July.

In 2009, S Samy Vellu ( left ) was re-elected unopposed as party president but he stood down in December 2010 to allow Palanivel, his then deputy, to takeover as acting president.

According to Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi only the vice-president and CWC positions will be reinstated, pending fresh elections.

As the interim president, Palanivel also appointed S Sothinathan as secretary-general, S Sumugesan as treasurer-general and L Sivasubramaniam as information officer.

"During the elections in 2009, there were no Putera or Puteri wings in existence, which were only created after the amendments to the Constitution made in September 2009.

"Thus, there will not be any representatives from these wings in the Interim Central Working Committee," said Palanivel in a press release.

A stain on Palanivel

Meanwhile, former MIC strategic director S Vell Paari has urged Palanivel to resign as MIC president in view of the RoS nullifying MIC's election held on Nov 30, 2013.

In another press release last night, Vell Paari ( left ) said the RoS decision had effectively confirmed that Palanivel had violated RoS rules.

"MIC is being punished for Palanivel's election mischiefs and misdeeds," he said.

Vell Paari warned that Palanivel could have violated Article 9A of the Registrar of Societies Act and be disqualified from contesting the in the re-election.

"The moral and right thing for him to do is to avoid further embarrassment to the party by resigning as minister and MIC president," he said.
