Two university students have been detained for calls they made on the social media to destroy the “cruel” courts by “lighting firecrackers” at 11.40 tonight.

In a tweet this morning, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar indicated that the two students, one from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the other from Universiti Selangor (Unisel) have been remanded for further investigations.

Khalid did not provide any further detail in his tweet.

The students uploaded an image of an upside-down scale on Facebook calling for members of the public to “fight the cruel courts” across the country.

Contacted by Malaysiakini , Khalid said there was no link between the arrests of the students and the video by four masked individuals, who also threatened to blast out firecrackers, that went viral on the social media.

In a report by Bernama recently, the one-minute-long YouTube video also displayed their threats to commit the offence at 11.30 tonight.

This video also showed the picture of Malaysian actress Nora Danish, held up by one of the masked individuals.

The actress, who found out about the video through a friend, said she will make a police report, Malay daily Sinar Harian reported today.

Khalid said the recording is still under investigation.

It is not clear as to whether these two cases have anything to do with Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's Sodomy II conviction and his incarceration recently.

However, the courts have become the targets for heavy criticism from the opposition and members of the public following the decision.

Meanwhile, in a statement today, Unisel expressed hope that its student, as well as the student from USM, are not guilty of any crime and are let off without any legal action.

According to Unisel's corporate communication chief Hasril Abu Hassan, the university will not interfere with the police investigation into the matter.

“We pray and hope that the students are found not guilty and are exempted from any legal action,” Hasril said.
