Police personnel staked out for about four hours at Selangor exco member Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad before moving in to arrest him.

In a press release today, Nik Nazmi said that he was informed of their presence by his driver and neighbours.

"They only introduced themselves to my driver and assistant at about 9.30pm," said Nik Nazmi, who was formally arrested at his home half an hour later.

Nik Nazmi was arrested under Section 143 of the Penal Code over his participation in a protest last Saturday against Anwar Ibrahim's incarceration.

He was released at 2am after his statements were recorded.

Nik Nazmi said that the decision to arrest him at 10am was uncalled for and that the police had many opportunities to record his statements earlier.

"The police could have done so when I was praying at the Jinjang police station during the solidarity event for Adam Adli Abd Halim and Fariz Musa, but they chose not to.

"Did they have to come late at night when my kids are asleep? As an elected lawmaker, I can't flee. I'm not a savage criminal," said Nik Nazmi, who is also the PKR Youth chief.

Nik Nazmi will still attend rallies

Having evaded arrest last Saturday for taking part in an illegal assembly, he was wanted for organising the 'Kita Lawan' rally in solidarity with jailed Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim on Feb 14.

At the same illegal assembly, police arrested Adam Adli, an activist, and Fariz, a PKR supreme council member.

Adam and Fariz were released yesterday morning.

Earlier, before his arrest, Nik Nazmi said arrests will not stop the weekly Kita Lawan rallies.

The rallies are a part of the opposition’s strategy to put pressure on the authorities for the conviction of Anwar.

"Arrest as many of us as you possibly can. The rakyat will still gather on Feb 28 and during the pinnacle on March 7, in front of Sogo," Nik Nazmi had tweeted.
