Putrajaya 'nay' to Justice Hishamudin's elevation?

Vijay47: The treatment meted out to Justice Mohd Hishamudin Yunus reflects both sides of the shameful state our once honourable judiciary has sunk to.

 

One is the deliberate suppression of those led and inspired by the true concepts of justice, while the other is the elevation of those who serve a regime's cause. Yet some like Justice Hishamudin refuse to play ball.

 

In the climate that our courts have been struggling these past many years, it would take someone of special moral strength to make decisions that though right, would be against the interests of the ruling party.

 

This judge has too often and for too long been an impediment to Umno's march towards total supremacy.

 

What has occurred now is not just a punishment for Justice Hishamudin, it is also a warning to the other judges that any display of independence will be firmly dealt with.

 

Azhar: This a good report by Malaysiakini’s Hafiz Yatim. It is another grim day for justice if the observations made here are indeed justified.

 

In fact, the judgments of all those who are bypassed, especially those who are deserving based on merit, should be carefully examined. For that matter, it would also be revealing to review judgments made by all those who are promoted.

 

We may be able to see a trend and this will speak volumes about our judicial system. We shall be then able to discern the truth for ourselves. In fact, we should also look at those who are awarded titles while in service.

 

SRMan: This simply means that the Federal Court judges we have now comprise largely, if not all, those who have made government-friendly decisions when they were presiding at the lower courts.

 

Would it be any surprise that these Federal Court judges continue to make government-friendly but questionable decisions?

 

And we wonder whether the Appeal Court judges who found Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim guilty at lightning speed last March would be similarly promoted.

 

Fair Play: It's always the darkest hour before dawn. Perhaps their time is nigh. People like Justice Hishamudin will invariably win in the end.

 

Chew Swee Yoke: Justice Hishamudin is held in the highest esteem by most members of the legal profession - his family line should be proud to be members of such high-class pedigree.

 

History will judge him to be one of the most distinguished judges this country was blessed to have.

 

Mohican: I once appeared before this honorable judge in chambers at Denmark House many years ago.

 

As soon as I had finished at around 11.45am or so, before I left the place, he quickly changed his court attire to get ready for Friday prayers and I, being a Christian, admired him immensely for his sense of loyalty and devotion to his Almighty. From that moment, I concluded that he will never go wrong in his judgments.

 

Justice Hishamudin, may God who governs all of us, high and mighty, great and small, reward you for your sense of fairness and justice in our courts as well as his.

 

Even if one is in a minority of one, the truth is the truth and one can never lose for standing up to the truth.

 

David Dass: Justice Hishamudin is a bright star in the judicial firmament. His judgments reflect a clear commitment to human rights and to the freedoms enshrined in the federal onstitution.

 

It would be tragic if the decision not to elevate him was made because of his judgments. We cannot call ourselves a developed nation if we suppress the voices of the righteous. We need people like Justice Hishamudin.

 

Versey: A judge who respects his profession and the law, will not substitute any political views for the law but will do his best to truly upholding the judge's oath to put the federal constitution ahead and above anything else to preserve the respectability of the law and the bench.

 

Justice Hishamudin rightly values integrity, and therefore deserves the highest respect from all thinking and respectable citizens of this land.

 

The readers’ comments in Malaysiakini show that the government of the day may not have recognised or acknowledged his expertise and good character, but we, the people, respect him as a great judge in our hearts and minds.

 

May the Almighty God bless him with good health and his future undertakings.

When his time comes as must all of us, he can lift his head high and say I lived my life according to the teachings of my God and the oath of office I took. Justice was done before my court. We salute you, Justice Hishamudin.

 

Malaysia Ku: A man’s conscience is his soul, the spiritual entity that is infinite. As John Thortan puts it: "Scourges, racks, and flames, can inflict no pains to be compared with the stings and tortures of a guilty conscience."

 

Justice Hishamudin can retire with a clear conscience and with his dignity intact. He will have no nightmares that inflict those who barter their conscience in the hands of fiends and robbers.

 

Desperate for Change: Justice Hishamuddin is a rare species in the current set up of judiciary.

 

Recently justices Mah Weng Kwai and Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof have both retired. When Justice Hishamudin retires, it will be another loss. 

 

Hplooi: As the old guards (who even now are sparse within the judicial ranks) retire or are put out to pasture, the new guards now populating the ranks will not be so independent.

Just look at the newly recruited members of the judiciary.
