A group of around 100 Malaysian Bar members, who call themselves the G100, has reiterated their urging that Bar Council president Christopher Leong apologise.

This is in relation to his statement made on the conviction of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy.

“We reiterate our urging to demand that Leong ( right ) immediately retract his press release dated Feb 11 and tender a public apology to the judiciary in respect thereof and communicate the same to all international bodies and entities,” the group said in a statement today.

The group pointed out how Leong, in his latest statement on Thursday, had acknowledged the statistics from the Attorney General’s Chambers that charges under sections 377A and 377B of the Penal Code are not at all that rarely used.

“He was wrong in the first place to mislead the public that it was rarely used and therefore should gentlemanly admit to and apologise for the said error,” the group said.

Malaysian Bar member Mohd Noor Amin, last week, in urging the Bar Council president to apolosise, said that should Leong fail to do so, they will take all “necessary steps” to urge his resignation as Malaysian Bar president.

Leong in his statement on Feb 11 had said that Anwar was “persecuted” instead of prosecuted.

He had also said that the law in relation to sodomy was “rarely used” to charge anyone in court.
