Bar Council president Christopher Leong says he will not be issuing an apology to the group of around 100 Malaysian Bar members, who call themselves the G100.

The G100 had already demanded twice for Leong to apologise over the statement he made on Feb 11 on the conviction of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for sodomy.

Previously, Leong had already replied to the group in his statement last Thursday where he said gave a detailed explanation on his earlier statement.  

“Just because they wish to repeat themselves does not mean that I have to. I have already given my comment during the Chinese New Year weekend last week,” Leong told Malaysiakini today.

G100 yesterday issued a statement asking Leong to retract his statement as well as step down if he fails to apologise for misleading the public with his statement.  

Leong in his statement on Feb 11 had said that Anwar was “ persecuted ” instead of prosecuted as there were “glaring anomalies” in the sodomy charge.

He also questioned why Anwar was charged under Section 377B of the Penal Code, which deals with consensual sodomy, when sodomy complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan was not charged.
