Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm), a loose coalition of media practitioners, will be launching a Twitter campaign tonight in solidarity with the staff of RTM and Bernama TV ( BTV ).

The "Solidarity Media for Media" campaign will kick of at 9PM with a tweet urging Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek to ensure the welfare of RTM and BTV staff.

"The “Solidarity Media for Media” campaign through Twitter will be launched on Tuesday at 9pm and Wednesday at 12pm, in hopes that the concerns raised will be discussed during the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by the prime minister," the group said in a recent statement.

They hope media practitioners will retweet the message.

Both RTM and BTV have been facing financial troubles recently.

RTM contract workers claim that they had gone unpaid since December, forcing some to resort to taking odd jobs, including selling coconuts.

Shabery had chalked it down to an administrative error, adding that the national broadcaster was currently undergoing a restructuring exercise to prepare itself for high-definition broadcast.

BTV meanwhile, was unable to pay workers their January wages, until Bernama gave the private broadcaster a loan for salaries up till February.

The station is also slated to hold a rebranding exercise, pending a full take over of BTV 's shares from private stakeholders, by Bernama .
