Water supply in Negri Sembilan is at critical level with less than 20 percent supply in the Gemencheh dam, Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (Span) said.

This comes after the Selangor government yesterday refuted rumours that there will be a 36-hour water cut in the state which neighbours Negri Sembilan.

Water at the Gemencheh dam is about a meter under critical levels, with reserves being only 19.23 percent, Ismail Kassim chairperson said.

"The dam produces untreated water to Gemencheh water treatment plant (LRA) before transferring its supply to Tampin and Rembau district.

"At present, the plant is only producing 20.5 million litre of water a day, as compared to usual water production of 45.5 million litre per day," he said.

More than 12,000 users have been affected despite the implementation of water rationing at affected locations since Sep last year.

Except on weekends, water rationing were done alternately with full water supply.                   

As such, measures which include obtaining treated water from Sawah Raja water treatment plant in Rembau and neighbouring Malacca.

"With such measures taken, hopefully water shortage in Gemencheh dam can be solved in the long run," Ismail said.

It was reported that water cuts will take place in Jelebu and Seremban on March 13.

The viral message on a 36-hour water cut in Selangor, spread via instant messaging application WhatsApp sparked fears in the state which sustained prolonged water rationing last year.

The Selangor government urged against speculation and spreading of false information.
