Amendments sought for the Syariah Criminal Code II Enactment 1993 will ensure that non-Muslims are not subjected to the law.

This was confirmed by Kelantan PAS deputy commissioner I Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.

"In the 1993 enactment, there is a clause which states that non-Muslims who violates syariah law have the option to be tried under those laws.

"But the amendments will remove this clause... This means non-Muslims will not be tried by the Syariah Court under Islamic criminal law," he said, according to Bernama.

Thus far, details on the amendments sought by the Kelantan government has been sketchy. The amendment bill will be tabled on March 18.

PAS' allies in Pakatan Rakyat have asked to see the bill before the sitting but PAS has refused to do so.

Meanwhile, Mohd Amar said that there has been four meetings with top Pakatan officials on the matter and thus the idea of postponing the bill does not arise.

"I have explained (to Pakatan leaders) what we intend to do in Kelantan. What more do they want? I don't see the rationale in explaning further.

"This enactment was passed in 1993, before Pakatan was formed... So we are not bound by the (demands made by the) coalition," he said.
