Roti jala and curry landed popular preacher Kazim Elias in the soup, after Perlis mufti Asri Zainul Abidin barred him from joining an Islamic forum in conjuction with the sultan’s birthday.

Asri said Kazim, who was once offered a spot on the Umno supreme council, had circulated a "false" hadith, claiming that Prophet Muhammad served "roti jala and curry" at a gathering.

"This department does not agree with selecting Datuk Kazim Elyas (sic) because he often reads out false hadiths," Asri’s Feb 27 letter uploaded on the mufti’s Facebook page reads.

The letter signed by Asri was addressed to Senator Mohd Khalid Ahmad, and sent to the Perlis menteri besar’s office.

Asri also uploaded an excerpt of Kazim’s book ‘Tuhan Sedang Menguji Kita’ (God Is Testing Us), where the celebrity ustaz claimed the prophet once served “dates dipped in flour".

“The Prophet Muhammad once held the cheapest feast. He served fried kurma dipped in batter.

“This was his cheapest feast, while at his most expensive feast he served roti jala with curry,” the excerpt reads.

Asri said that the bar on Kazim from joining the forum does not mean he cannot speak publicly in the state.

In response, Kazim’s official Facebook page administrator urged the mufti to not make baseless accusations.

He urged Asri not to refer to fake social media accounts claiming to represent Kazim, as a reason to block the preacher.

The hadith, or prophetic traditions, refer to a collection of the prophet’s teachings, deeds and sayings.
