The March 7 Freedom rally slated for tomorrow, will see international observers on the ground at the gathering.

The International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY), in a statement today, confirmed that it will be represented by its Asia Pacific vice-president.

“IUSY will be represented by our Asia Pacific vice-president, Pimisiri Petchnamrob, to observe on the ground the March 2 Freedom rally in Kuala Lumpur,” the group said.

Founded in 1907, IUSY is the biggest political youth organisation in the world, representing about 140 member organisations from more than 100 countries.

The group had said earlier that now was the time for more young people to come forward in joining and also shaping the movement.

“The rally, in solidarity with (Opposition Leader) Anwar Ibrahim on March 7 in Kuala Lumpur, will be the climax of its first chapter and also a decisive yardstick on the success of the movement.

“IUSY expresses unwavering support for Malaysian youths in exercising their constitutional rights to peaceful street demonstrations, in demand for justice and freedom, not only for Anwar but everything he stands and fight for.”

Expressing concern over the imprisonment of Anwar for sodomy, the group was also concerned that the charge levied against Anwar was an attempt of the ruling regime not only to silence prominent voices of critique, but also to deter others from expression of dissent as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.

Pointing out the various protests and rallies held since the imprisonment of Anwar, the group said it reflected the concerns of Malaysian youths on the independence of the Malaysian democratic process and judicial system.

“The arrests of social activists and elected officials not in line with the political leanings of the ruling regime shall never hinder the people’s movement in demanding reform,” IUSY said.

Several politicians and activists, including PKR’s Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s S Arutchelvan and cartoonist Zunar, have been arrested in relation to Anwar’s conviction, either by attending rallies or making remarks on the matter.
