The Elections Commission (EC) has received 41 eligible objections over the redelineation of electoral boundaries in Sarawak, EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Md Yusof said today.

The objections were from local authorities and groups of 100 or more electors, he said.

The EC completed the local inquiries into the redelineation exercise today (March 6), having received 64 representations on objections during the local inquiries held over two weeks at 10 places in the state, he said.

“The EC was most satisfied with the representations and explanations from those submitting the objections during the inquiries,” he said.

Abdul Aziz said the EC would study every representation that had been made in writing and orally, and would give fair consideration to every objection.

“The outcome of the local inquiries will be announced during the display session and second round of objections, the date of which will be made known in the local newspapers and on the EC official website,” he said.

The EC has proposed 11 new seats to raise to 82 the number of state seats in Sarawak.

These are N13 Batu Kitang, N17 Stakan, N18 Serembu, N23 Triboh, N26 Gedong, N40 Kabong, N57 Telian, N63 Selirik, N66 Murum, N70 Samalaju and N78 Long Lama.

It has also recommended a change of name for one parliamentary and four state seats.

It has proposed that the parliamentary constituency of P198 Mambong be renamed P198 Puncak Borneo and the state constituencies of N19 Bengoh, N34 Batang Air, N41 Belawai and N68 Kidurong be renamed N19 Mambong, N34 Batang Ai, N41 Kuala Rajang and N68 Tanjong Batu, respectively.
