PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail urged the people to back the Kita Lawan rally today in Kuala Lumpur as a sign of support to Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

 

"Anwar has sacrificed himself for the betterment of the nation. Now that he is jailed, what should we do? We should stand behind him and show his sacrifice is not in vain," she said in addressing the crowd of about 150 at the MBPJ Civic Hall today.

 

A teary eyed Wan Azizah said the family and the party are upset by Anwar's imprisonment but it also has fueled their drive to keep fighting. 

 

"We are saddened but this has also driven our spirit. It has given us more reason to continue fighting and given us the extra push needed to oppose cruelty," she added. 

 

PKR deputy present Azmin Ali ( left ) echoed Wan Azizah and also suggested the government should look at the rally today positively. 

 

"Even though Anwar has been jailed, the fire still burns strongly among the party leaders and members. 

 

"I hope Umno and BN sees the rally as an effort to save the country," he said. 

Meanwhile, when asked about the application for a royal pardon, Wan Azizah said it was his right as a citizen.

 

"When you meet royalty, you greet them with 'ampun (pardon) tuanku', it is a royal custom," she said. 

 

Wan Azizah added the application also did not imply that Anwar was guilty but to highlight an error by the judiciary.

 

"We are not admitting that Anwar is wrong but there has been a miscarriage of justice in his case," she reiterated.

 

She also held that today's rally would not tarnish the party image or hurt the chances of Anwar's pardon application.

 

"The is the voice of the people. Why would it tarnish our party's image?" she queried. 

 

The #Kita Lawan protest is to be held at Sogo to campaign for the release of Anwar and the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak. 

 

The protest is expected to kick off at 3pm. The participants are to march from Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek and the PAS headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut to Sogo and is scheduled  to last till midnight.
