No more excuses, those in power must declare assets

YOURSAY ‘It is good if a Umno leader spearheads this project.’

Syed Ali: I've no problem declaring assets, too

Idon'tlikekangkung: Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee, it looks like someone has called your bluff.

And you suddenly realised what a can of worms (some of them the size of anacondas) you have opened.

You might have nothing to hide but can the same be said about your colleagues in the government? This would be very interesting.

And I agree with your independent mechanism and body to monitor this. But since we cannot trust the independence of anyone that is linked, however remotely, to your corrupt regime, and you cannot trust those who are linked to the opposition, let’s have a really independent foreign body do this, shall we?

In the name of fair play and full transparency and disclosure, let’s get a group of people whom all parties can respect. How about the folks from Transparency International (excluding de facto Integrity Minister Paul Low of course)?

Ace: Actually the only ones who should declare their assets should be those in power and who are in positions where they can take advantage of to "earn additional income".

It is ridiculous to ask opposition MPs and those who do not hold positions to give out "favours" to do so because if that is the case, then every Ah Kow, Ahmad and Muthu walking along Petaling Street will also have to publicly declare their assets and income.

As wealth and income are very sensitive and confidential matters to both ordinary citizens and the rich, it is insensitive to ask all and sundry to declare such information as it may expose them to many dangers such as extortionists and kidnappers, for example.

Can the Malaysian police guarantee their safety?

Malaytoo: As expected, the excuse comes first - need to have an independent mechanism before declaring assets.

Syed Ali is only a division leader but can't even declare his assets without putting hurdles to it. What more those in power?

If you want to do, do it. No need to buy time.

Xed: Syed Ali chose to challenge others to declare their assets (at that time, he made no mention of an "independent mechanism").

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli did not ask for an "independent mechanism" when he accepted the challenge and agreed to declare his assets.

Now, Syed Ali wants an "independent mechanism" before he will declare his assets. He should quit waffling.

He should get Umno to declare the "donations" it has received. Actually, more often the "donations" are money extorted from non-Malays and foreigners these pseudo-nationalist and big-mouthed racists attack frequently.

Anonymous_1419577444: No need for an independent mechanism.

If your heart is pure in becoming a representative with the aim to help the people and the country, you would honestly disclose all your assets, including those that are not held in your name but belonged to or controlled by you.

Basically: Why only Selangor MB Azmin Ali? Syed Ali should ask all Umno representatives in Selangor to do the same, including former Selangor Umno MBs.

Syed Ali, we don't care about your assets, we care about the top ranking Umno leaders'. If you expect Azmin to do it, then the same should apply to your bosses.

Otherwise, you are just trolling, which is the usual Umno response to criticism. It's always either “you are also like that” or “why don't you do it” when cornered.

CQ Muar: Syed Ali, in the first place, who cares two hoots about you and your threats?

Now that your proposal directed at the opposition reps has been accepted, just make sure all Umno leaders, cronies and ministers take the initiative to do so, no less - otherwise keep your gap shut.

This country doesn't belong to you and your party, therefore don't throw your weight around by intimidating others.

We are all Malaysians regardless of race, religion or creed. Are you so sure you would hold on to power for the next 20 years?

Baiyuensheng: It is good that a Umno leader spearhead this project. It is about time to improve the transparency and rid of corruption in this country.

Malaysia should follow the lead set by Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo. Syed Ali would have the backing of the opposition parties and start the ball rolling.

Well Thats Fantastic: Why are all Umno people are so lacking of substance? Any country deserves better than these fools.

You cannot add a qualification to the dare when you were the initiator of the dare in the first place, sounds like preschool mentality to do so.

MingXiang: I have a problem declaring my assets. I don't have any to declare.
