An NGO will gather in front of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Shah Alam next week to protest government inaction against three MACC officers involved in the death of the late DAP aide Teoh Beng Hock.

The Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy (TBHTD) condemned the subsequent promotion of two of the officers involved as a reward to the officers whose actions the Court of Appeal last September ruled contributed to Teoh's death.

"(We) strongly condemn this (promotions), which is tantamount to rewarding the culprit who caused the loss of a citizen's life.

"It speaks volumes of the level of impunity and the lack of moral responsibility in the country," TBHTD said in a statement today.

The Court of Appeal on Sept 5 last year ruled that Teoh's death had been "accelerated by an unlawful act or acts" of persons inclusive of three MACC officers involved in questioning him, and ordered the inspector-general of police (IGP) to commence investigations and the attorney-general to frame the charges.

The three are then Selangor MACC deputy director Hishamuddin, investigating officer Arman Alies and assistant investigating officer Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus.

"Since then, the police set up an independent team to re-investigate Teoh's death. Six months have passed but the police have yet to disclose any detail of investigation.

"The three MACC officers should remain suspects of Teoh's murder," TBHTD said.

"In this regard, how could MACC dismiss the fact that the investigation is still in progress and approve the promotion of Hishamuddin as director of Sabah MACC and promote Mohd Anuar Ismail from Grade 44 to Grade 48?

"The Prime Minister's Department and MACC owe the people an explanation," the NGO said.

'Ugly development'

Last week Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching ( below ) questioned how Hishamuddin, who was promoted to Negri Sembilan MACC director some time between the Teoh incident and the royal commission of inquiry into the death in 2011, could still be allowed to head the Sabah MACC division despite the Court of Appeal ruling.

"The Court of Appeal's verdict clearly stipulates that Teoh did not commit suicide, thus MACC must be held responsible for his death during detention," added TBHTD.

The NGO also said it wants to "show the people's disapproval of the ugly development and the will to bring the murderers to justice" with their 'Justice Is Dead' protest next Thursday, March 19 at the Selangor MACC office at Wisma PKPS in Shah Alam.

Teoh was found dead at outside the MACC Selangor's previous headquarters at Plaza Masalam on July 16, 2009, after a night of interrogation on an investigation against his boss, Selangor state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah.
