DAP today charged that a fake Facebook fan page which promotes Penang party chief Chow Kon Yeow as chief minister is allegedly being administered by an MCA leader.

DAP Socialist Youth Organising Secretary Lee Chin Chen said he was alerted to the matter by an anonymous e-mail sent to him last week.

"The information I received from the email is that Penang MCA youth chief Michael Lee Beng San is the administrator of the fake page," Lee, who is Ketari assemblyman, told Malaysiakini .

"In the e-mail we received screenshots of the page which showed Beng San posting information on the page," he said.

Lee said DAP wants Beng San to respond to the accusation that he is behind the fake DAP Facebook page which is in Chinese.

At the time of writing, several telephone calls and text messages to Beng San from Malaysiakini went unanswered.

Chow, who is also a Penang executive council member, had earlier lodged reports on the fake Facebook page with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

However, there has been "no further action," Lee said.

Lee also held a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today where he showed screenshots of the alleged fake postings featuring Beng San's name.

'Money was used'

The matter had first come to light in December last year in Penang when Chow - the Tanjong MP - said he had come across the fake page which has accumulated more ‘Likes’ than Chow's  own official Facebook page.

The fake Facebook page appears to want to put a wedge between Chow and Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng by promoting Chow as CM.

Lee alleged the fake Facebook page administrator had "used money" to promote misleading remarks and false rumours involving Chow.

"Based on the information we gathered, the administrator pretended to be a veteran DAP member to win the confidence of netizens.

"He tried to speak as a member to portray that Guan Eng was suppressing Chow. This is an attempt to split DAP for MCA's political agenda," Lee said.

Lee said DAP leaders were matured enough not to fall into this "political trap" as it was merely an MCA tactic to undermine DAP.

He slammed MCA for often saying the party promotes a healthy political culture while condoning their youth leader's alleged "dirty job".
