An inmate sentenced to the hangman's noose is seeking clemency from Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Ismail ( below ) in conjunction with the sultan's coronation on March 23.

Chandran Paskaran's mother, D Nagamal, personally handed over the letter requesting for a pardon on behalf of her son, to the Johor Palace this morning.

"We sent the letter this morning [...] she cried when she delivered it," Chandran's lawyer, M Manoharan told Malaysiakini .

Nagamal, 59, had previously succeeded in getting the sultan to stay Chandran's death sentence at the 11th hour, on Feb 6, 2014, just a day before the execution.

The 37-year-old has spent 12 years in prison after the courts found him guilty for the 2003 murder of another youth in Johor Bahru.

He is the only one out of 11 suspects to have been arrested with the others still at large.

'Suicidal tendencies'

In the letter to the sultan sighted by Malaysiakini, Manoharan argued that there was no direct evidence linking Chandran to the murder.

"There is no direct evidence, nor even one eyewitness who saw my client kill the victim," he said in the letter.

Besides circumstantial evidence, Manoharan ( right ) also argued Chandran should be pardoned as he had not committed any prior crimes and any mistakes he had made were due to the 'stupidity of youth'.

He added, the inmate has shown good behavior throughout his incarceration and has had no disciplinary problems.

"Even though he (Chandran) is under duress,and has suicidal tendencies, our client has maintained his good behaviour," Manoharan's letter to the sultan pleaded.

Sultan Ibrahim had previously granted a full pardon to eight death row inmates in 2012 while commuting the sentences of four others  - charged with murder and drug trafficking - from death to life imprisonment.
