The MACC has opened an investigation paper into the mismanagement of incinerator projects, an anti-incinerator group said.

Gabungan Anti Insinerator Kebangsaan (Gaik) said MACC has admitted it found merit in Gaik’s report to the anti-corruption agency on the matter.

"(The MACC) said the information given by Gaik was convincing, and resulted in the (opening of an) investigation paper," Gaik said in a statement.

"They are following due process to gather the relevant information from the related parties. (However) the details of the investigation are classified," it added.

When contacted, MACC confirmed the matter is under investigation.

Gaik has lodged multiple police reports nationwide after the Public Accounts Committee noted last year the possibility of elements of graft in the incinerator projects awarded by the government.

The PAC earlier found the Urban Well-being, Housing, and Local Government Ministry to have awarded four incinerator construction projects to CXN Technology Sdn Bhd (XCNT) without due diligence, resulting in delays and inefficiencies.

Committee chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed recommended that action be taken against XCNT and those responsible for approving the project.

However, Nur Jazlan stopped short of recommending any corruption investigation, saying that this would be up to the government.

The Housing, Local Government and Urban Well-being Ministry is now moving to build an incinerator in Kepong through open tender, despite the project being widely opposed by Kepong residents.
