DAP shot back at PAS claiming that they were not trying to influence anyone against the Islamist party but merely expressing disappointment on not being consulted on the implementation of hudud.

DAP had said it was cutting ties with its 'dishonest" president Abdul Hadi Awang, who submitted a Private Members Bill on the implementation of hudud to Parliament without consulting its allies.

PAS responded by branding the move discriminatory .

Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming said today his party was not against PAS but was peeved with Hadi's action.

He has to explain why he submitted the bill as that showed a lack of accountability, he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Ong also reiterated DAP’s stand that “it is very hard for us to work with Hadi now” which the party stated yesterday.

He added that Hadi ( left ) should  explain not only to other Pakatan parties but also to the people.

“He must explain to the public because it is not only DAP he has betrayed but also the many voters who supported PAS at the last general election,”Ong asserted.

Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari also echoed Ong’s stand saying PAS broke its promise of not consulting other Pakatan parties before attempting to implement Islamic law.

 

However, both DAP lawmakers denied their party was trying to influence how PAS members vote in the upcoming party elections in June.

“Whatever we do, we cannot influence how PAS members vote,” Ong maintained.

Zairil added DAP’s concern with PAS was over the attempts to implement hudud, which it saw as a betrayal, not with its elections.

Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun ( right ) also reaffirmed that DAP was in no way trying to influence PAS members to withdraw support for its current president.

“We have no such intention and we are not influencing PAS members. Let the party solve their own problems,” he said when met at the Dewan Rakyat.

Relations between DAP and PAS have become increasingly frayed following PAS-ruled Kelantan’s decision to table amendments to the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment 1993 to pave the way for the eventual implementation of hudud in Kelantan.

The amendments were tabled at the Kelantan state assembly on March 19 and unanimously passed by the 44 assemblypersons present, including the 12 from Umno.

PAS will now seek to amend the Federal Constitution in Parliament in order to put hudud into practice in Kelantan.

DAP - as well as BN component parties MCA and Gerakan - have said they will stringently oppose any move by PAS to implement hudud, either locally or nationally.

DAP has also said that PAS risked cooperation within Pakatan if it continued to pursue the implementation of hudud.
