De facto Law Minister Nancy Shukri today revealed the government was not behind most of the roadshows organised by Umno-linked lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah after opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II trial.

 

This was because the government’s contract with Shafee ceased when the decision was made by the apex court early last month, she told the Dewan Rakyat today.

 

“His services contracted with the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) ended when the case ended,” Nancy said. Shafee was appointed the special prosecutor for the government.

 

Despite organising one of Shafee’s roadshows, which Nancy claimed to be “private”, she dismissed the allegation that the government was behind the roadshows that Shafee spoke, where he was alleged to have revealed in-camera proceedings.

 

“What happened after (the case) is his own responsibility and has nothing to do with the AGC or the government,” she said in reply to a question by Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) ( left ).

 

Nancy also revealed that the government has not paid Shafee yet for his services in the prosecution of Anwar’s because he has not sent the invoice.

He had agreed to a nominal fee of RM1000.

 

The senior lawyer first held a public talk on the Sodomy II case at an event where Umno Youth chief and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar was present.

 

At this function, Shafee, who was appointed by Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail to prosecute the Sodomy II appeal before the Federal Court, described the in-camera evidence in detail.

 

Shafee then held another talk at Anwar's parliamentary constituency of Permatang Pauh, where PKR also held a protest. However, media personnel covering the event were not allowed to report what he said.
