Singapore authorities on today urged travellers from Malaysia to avoid carrying poultry products, whether cooked or uncooked, when they enter the city-state.

"To avoid inconvenience at the checkpoints, all travellers are reminded not to bring these products, cooked or uncooked, even if they are in small quantities for personal consumption," the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority said in a statement.

If found, poultry products will be destroyed at the checkpoints, it said.

Poultry products banned

Singapore on Wednesday banned imports of all poultry products from its neighbour after Malaysia said it had detected a lethal strain of bird flu at a farm in the northern state of Kelantan.

Singapore, a small but affluent island-nation with no farm sector, imports 120,000 live chickens and 20,000 live ducks daily from Malaysia.

The island-republic of four million people also sources two-thirds of its total egg consumption, or two million eggs daily, from Malaysia.
