The Perak government has taken several proactive measures in a bid to prevent a recurrence of water rationing in Taiping and Kamunting, state Public Amenities, Infrastructure, Energy and Water Committee chairperson Zainol Fadzi Paharudin said.

He said the state government had acquired additional source of water supply through the upgrading projects done at the Gunung Semanggol and Air Terjun water treatment plants to meet the demand of water in the two districts.

“The first phase of the upgrading project at Gunung Semanggol water treatment plant was completed in November 2014 and it now produces additional water supply of 20 million litres per day (MLD) to be distributed to Taiping and Kamunting.

“Besides, the implementation of the second phase of the project is now at the tender stage. It is expected to be completed by end of 2016 and increase the plant’s water production capacity by 14 MLD,” he said in reply to Teh Kok Lim (DAP-Pokok Assam) at the state assembly sitting in Ipoh today.

Zainol said the upgrading project at the Air Terjun water treatment plant, on the other hand, was ongoing and was expected to produce additional water supply of 18 MLD.

“This upgrading project involves the installation of ‘intakes’ at Sungai Wang. I'm confident that the project will be completed by end of this year,” he added.
